Weeknote: 27 September to 1 October 2021

Small dishes of guacamole, whipped cheese and hummus with toasted bread on wooden board
Light lunch and a Sunday afternoon stroll in Ilkley

What happened this week?

  • Went to the HETT conference, in person, saw some old friends for the first time in ages, and met some NHSX colleagues for the first time
  • With NHS England colleagues, presented to a board committee, got really helpful feedback on our plans for digital transformation in urgent and emergency care
  • Observed some user research, heard a patient’s frustration at how services don’t work together, and wondered at the waste of resources when we fail to meet our users’ real needs first time
  • Took a PCR test (it was negative, phew)
  • Met an awesome group of user-centred design leaders convened by Simon to advance our profession in the NHS
  • Talked EPR usability (or lack of it) with a senior consultant and an NHSX colleague
  • Took part in the Audit and Risk Committee at Leeds & Yorkshire Housing, where I’m a non-exec director

What am I looking forward to?

  • A new starter in our team
  • The team’s new weekly cadence
  • Presenting at the King’s Fund urgent and emergency care (virtual) conference

What do I need to take care of?

  • Concerned that a complicated new piece of work is not yet set up with all the skills needed to accomplish the required outcomes. I’m asking questions about how we might apply some agile practices to remove dependencies rather than proliferate handoffs
  • The team has a lot of work to do over the coming weeks, and some team members have other things going on for them outside our work. We need to be focused on what’s important, and kind to ourselves when it comes to working out what’s achieveable
