It started with a cast of 18th Century heroes – one woman and eight men. By the end of this story, two of them will be dead, one imprisoned and one will have fled his country. Two will see their inventions vindicated in war, two will found technology start-ups, and one (no prizes for guessing which) will give birth to a baby and a book.
