Meanwhile, Mary Wollstonecraft author of the Vindication of the Rights of Women, was in Paris, about to give birth to the daughter of the American adventurer Gilbert Imlay. Imlay abandoned her, leaving her to bring up the baby and write one of the first histories of the French Revolution.
